The UNO Mavericks defeated the NIU Huskies in a 7-0 drubbing on Friday night.
The Mavs started off hot, and early too, as Blake Glaser scored just 10 seconds into the game with a shot from the right circle, assisted by Ryan Hedquist and Charles Lowndes. Then, to follow that up, Wyatt Wagner scored from just inside the blue line off an assist from Chase Mann at just 1:07. Later in the period, at 19:06, Tyler Schirmer would score on the power play, off the rebound with a big shot coming off the stick of Lowndes, also assisted by Glaser.
Northern Illinois had managed to survive for much of the second period until Wagner scored his second of the night, tipping in a point shot by Camden Forys, assisted by Karson Fitch as well. Not long after, at 9:38, Schirmer would get his second of the night as put away a garbage goal from assists by Hedquist and Glaser. At 13:29, Wagner would score his third of the game for the hat trick! Putting his team up 6-0, being helped by Mann and Fitch.
The third would bring less offensive results, but Austin Tessier did score to make it 7-0, as he received a pass from Forys at 17:34. UNO finished going 1 for 2 on the power play and 2 for 2 on the penalty kill. Cam Moore didn’t have a lot of work to do between the pipes, but did stop all 17 shots that he faced. NIU’s senior goaltender Jacob Stermin put in a valiant effort nonetheless as he still stopped a whopping 72 of 79 shots.
The Mavericks are playing the semifinal of these MACHA playoffs at 7:45 pm CT on Saturday, February 21st. They will be facing the Missouri State University Ice Bears, as they defeated the Wash U Bears 5-3 in their quarterfinal matchup.
The live stream will be available on the “Maryville Saints DIII Hockey” YouTube channel.
