Saturday night at Baxter Arena’s Holland Ice was a night to remember for many reasons. It was Senior Night, in which Mavericks Captain, defenseman Troy Hunsicker and goaltender Nahuel Veyan were honored for their achievements academically. Before their final regular season matchup vs the Creighton Bluejays. Not just a regular season matchup but the Nebraska Cup
Final!
Omaha,Nebraska - The University of Nebraska at Omaha Mavericks took it to the Creighton University Bluejays, winning this last regular season matchup by an incredible score of 9-1.
The first period started out much like the night before, with the Mavs out shooting the Bluejays early on. UNO would strike first on the power play as freshman Blake Glaser scored his 39th of the year, pushing the puck across the line with a sprawled out Creighton goaltender, Charles Calderone, after Hunsicker put a low wrister on net, at 5:45. This was followed by a flurry of Mavs goals as Lucas Epperson, Tyler Schirmer, Charles Lowndes and Zach Farnsworth all added their own to the scoresheet. CU would add a power play marker to break the shutout at 19 minutes into the first as Caden Lacher would pot one off a great feed from Patrick Kroski.
In the middle frame, Lowndes would score his second of the game off an assist by Glaser at 11:40. Then, in the dying minutes of the second, Kroski would take a tripping penalty. Sending the highly potent UNO power play to work once again. Karson Fitch scored about halfway through the man advantage, assisted by Wyatt Wagner and Austin Tessier. The Mavs would finish this game a perfect 3 for 3 on the power play.
The third and final period saw UNO strike early, as Charlie Shea would score his second goal in as many games. He was helped by Brayden Krauth. Later on, freshman and Omaha homegrown talent, Charles Lowndes capped off the night with a hat trick goal at 13:10. At which point, the Mavs only had to play through about seven more minutes, before the final buzzer sounded and the UNO ACHA D3 team had captured their third piece of hardware for the season, The Nebraska Cup! With an assist on the opening goal and a solid effort from the blueline, Troy Hunsicker, as well as his fellow senior, Nahuel Veyan, who made an impressive 25 stops on 26 Creighton shots would help lead their team to the victory over their rivals, on Senior Night.
UNO was strong on the penalty kill as they went 4 for 5 and perfect on the powerplay. As well, there were 13 different skaters recording points and 5 players with multipoint efforts. A successful night to say the least for our Mavericks. They’ll be looking to build on this momentum as they prepare for their upcoming conference tournament starting on February 20th in Chesterfield, Missouri.
